Multipurpose Solutions

There are many multipurpose solutions on the market now-days. In an attempt to vie for a greater market share, some solution companies have tried without success the " No Rub," solutions. With so many solutions on the market, how is a contact lens wearer to decide which solution is best? At CLA we recommend that all users of multi purpose solutions rub their lenses upon removal.

All multipurpose solutions follow the same basic cleaning procedures:

  1. Wash hands and remove lens. (always work right to left to avoid mixing lenses)
  2. Place lens in a puddle of solution in the palm of your hand and rub the lens with index or middle finger for 10-20 seconds per side. (this lifts most stuck on deposits-lipids, mucins, and proteins).
  3. Rinse lens between thumb and forefinger under a stream of solution.
  4. Put a small amount of solution in lens well, add lens and fill case halfway so lens is submerged in solution. Close case tightly.
  5. Lenses should be left in the solution from 6 to 10 hrs, or overnight, according to the product directions.

Several multipurpose solutions also include the optional step of using a specially formulated daily cleaner instead, when rubbing the lens

As with the cleaning of anything, you will always get more "junk" off if you use some form of friction. Just as a washing machine agitates clothes, the rubbing action in the cleaning process lifts off deposits that may be somewhat stuck on the lens surfaces. Daily removal of these deposits will maintain the comfort, clarity and fit of any lens.

Your fitter may advise you to use a conventional multipurpose cleaner daily and an enzyme tablet on a monthly basis due either to the dryness of your eyes, or the amount of deposits he observes on the lens.

Whichever solution you use, it is important for the health of your eyes, that you follow the cleaning procedures fully.

The Clear Care System

The Clear Care system is a 1 step cleaning system that utilizes a daily cleaner with a disinfectant of 3% hydrogen peroxide / sodium chloride solution to clean and disinfect contact lenses. Though more involved than most contact lens care regimes, those who find themselves sensitive to the chemicals in multipurpose solutions, or are prone to dry eyes, will find this system gives the greatest ocular comfort. This is due to the fact that hydrogen peroxide in which the lenses are placed, is broken down into non-preserved saline during the neutralization process.

The Clear Care system, as with any hydrogen peroxide system, also has the advantage of being able to penetrate the lens matrix as it disinfects while removing surface deposits.

The Clear Care system consists of a hydrogen peroxide disinfectant, disposable lens case with platinum catalyst disc.

For best pratice, disinfect and neutralize your lenses with the Clear Care system by carefully following the steps below:

  1. Always remember to wash your hands with warm soapy water prior to removing or inserting your lenses.
  2. Fill the lens case to the line with Clear Care Disinfectant keeping the lid of the lens holder out of the solution.
  3. Clean and hydrate the lenses with a saline rinsing solution then place them in the cleaning case.
  4. Wait 6 hours to remove the lens from the solution before using.
  5. Never reuse the solution and repeat step 2 if lenses are not worn within 48 hours of disinfection.
  6. For long term storage of lenses, consult your Contact Lens Fitter.

When using the Clear Care Disinfectant, there are two situations that can cause discomfort to the contact lens wearer upon inserting his / her lenses: Failure of the platinum disc to fully neutralize the peroxide and improper hydration of the lens before disinfection.

  1. The neutralization of the hydrogen peroxide is caused by a catalytic reaction with the platinum disc. Each disc is designed to be effective for the life of one bottle of disinfectant. A fresh case is supplied with each purchase of a large bottle of Clear Care Disinfectant. A case used beyond is useful life span may not be able to fully neutralize the peroxide causing the lens to sting or cause pain upon insertion.
When the disc is neutralizing properly, there will be lots of little bubbles left in the saline.
  2. When removing the lenses from your eyes and they appear dry, be sure you hydrate them in a puddle of saline solution before cleaning them or the lenses may tear.
  3. The end result of the Clear Care Disinfectant during the neutralization process is a breakdown to an unpreserved saline. Therefore, the lenses must be disinfected every 48 hours whether worn or not.
Without the preserving chemicals of the multipurpose solution, it is possible for the growth of fungus and / or bacteria to begin in the solution or on the lenses. This solution should only be used by the more compliant patient.

Optional Product Care:

  1. Remove the right lens, place it in a puddle of rinsing saline in the palm of your hand.
  2. Add 2-3 drops of AOFlow daily cleaner to the puddle and rub the lens back and forth in the palm of your hand for 10 seconds on each side.
  3. Rinse the lens between thumb and forefinger with rinsing saline until the lens feels clean and place in the right side of the lens holder.
  4. Place the right lens in the lens holder, place the lens holder in the case. The disinfectant will begin to bubble.
  5. Repeat steps 1-3 with the left lens. Remove the holder from the case place the lens in the left compartment and replace the holder in the disinfectant.
  6. With the lids closed, gently shake the case to ensure the whole lenses are bathed in solution.
  7. Allow the lenses to soak for at least 6 hours or overnight. After disinfection is complete the Clear Care Disinfectant solution will have been broken down into normal saline.
  8. Before inserting the lenses, rinse with rinsing saline.

If recommended by your contact lens fitter, an enzyme tablet may be added to the cleaning regimen on a weekly basis. After both lenses have been cleaned and rinsed, drop an enzyme tablet into the lens case, replace lens holder, gently shake and leave 6 hours or overnight. Rinse well.

The extra cleaner absorbed into the lenses do not rinse away easily. The symptoms of this chemical reaction is to have the case foam-over and stinging upon insertion of the lenses.
